Fall 2017 SEGUE Fall 2017

Hi Everyone!
First of all, a big apology for not getting SEGUE out to you sooner! It has been a busy first year as Chair! I am thrilled to have taken over after Helen’s Bieber's retirement. She set a great example, left the department in great shape and is truly a hard act to follow but I am excited to do my best! Many thanks to her for all of her years of service!
As many of you know, the department has undergone a few changes in the past year. The biggest one is the change from “Electronic Media” to “ The Department of Cinema, Television and Media Production.” The current faculty felt that in the ever changing climate of our industry we should define more clearly what we do here at KU and so this is the name that we came up with and it became official on July 1. We are excited to begin to promote our program under the new name and we are hopeful that we will continue to attract students from PA and surrounding states. Along with the program name change came a few changes to the curriculum which now includes more CTM electives and requires a course called “Masterpieces in Film.” We felt that the two industries are so closely aligned now that we needed to give the students some background in film history. We also have several new courses on the books that students can take as electives including Narrative Film, Script to Screen, Comedy Writing Workshop, The Evolution of Sports and the Media, American Cinematography . . . . . . We are doing our best to stay up to date with changes in the industry.
Another change this past year was a facelift to the CTM offices. We now have a student collaborative workspace where students and faculty gather to socialize, discuss projects and collaborate on ideas for films and class projects. The space is complete with a movie house style popcorn machine. We have a One O’clock Pop twice a week when we feature student work or a “ film you must see” on our large screen television.
We also welcomed Melissa Lincoln, our new department secretary who came to us from Athletics. Dr. Matt McKeague has returned as a tenure track faculty member and we are excited to welcome two new faces - Angela Pignalia and Scott Bastedo as our temp positions. While much of the University has seen a slight decline in enrollment for the Fall, the CTM department and the College of Visual and Performing Arts have seen an increase. Our department alone has nearly doubled the number of incoming freshman from what we had last Fall.
While we have had a very busy 2016-17 academic year we are well rested and looking forward to an exciting 2017-18!!
Be sure to look further into the newsletter for more details, news and updates! Also feel free to reach out to the department via email or facebook with changes in your life. We love to hear from you and hope that you will stop by when you can!
I hope to see you all at Homecoming this year!
Sincerely,
Cara Cotellese,
Chair- Cinema,Television and Media Production Dept.
